Done with flowers: This year's garden is all edible

I wanted to showcase our new garden plans. I found a plan online that used Rubbermaid totes as a self-watering garden container, using minimal additional parts. Here they are!

This is the finished product. The base is made from cutting out the center of the lid, and is suspended 6" off of the bottom of the bin. This should allow for roughly a 5 gallon reservoir below. The two drain pipes will be packed tightly with dirt, and will provide the wicking action to keep the above plants happy and healthy while I'm on the road.

View of the reservoir. 6 additional pieces of drainpipe will provide the support to hold up the false bottom.

A PVC pipe is the fill tube to replenish the reservoir. This one has been planted with 3 rows of greens: lettuce (Mesclun), arugula, and spinach.

Today's new addition. 3 new tomato plants, taking us up to a strong half dozen. Homemade cage to reduce costs. ;)

Ground cover plant that has fought through 3 winters. Don't remember what it is, but it won't seem to die. And you can see the new growth on the blue spruce! (Lighter green puffs at the end of each branch)
Hanging baskets filled with succulents. (Learned my lesson last year) Sedum mix in the one, and the other two have that ice plant succulent that has the bold purple flowers.

Service berry bush and blackberry vines, spinach, lettuce, arugula, carrots, basil, tomatoes, cilantro, rosemary... We'll keep you posted, but we're hoping for a fruitful year!!
