Paddling and camping along the Colorado River

We wanted to share a few photos of our recent canoeing and camping trip. Rachel and I, along with our fearless shepard Tango, paddled 25 miles of the Colorado River through both Horse Thief and Ruby canyon, camping halfway along the journey. A ton of rain had the river flowing above normal and made it quite turbid, but a good time was had by all.

Tango, standing guard near our tent.

We prepared a tarp tent because the forecast was rain throughout the weekend. Weather held out though, didn't rain a drop on us at base camp.

Canoe camping is very similar to truck camping. A floating barge allows all the comforts of home: camp chairs, firewood, cast iron, etc. The way camping should be. :)

Our flotilla. 5 canoes, 1 inflatable kayak, and a cataraft.

Interesting rock...we'll all hike up to it.

 View of base camp below.

R's lab mate Katie and Tango, headed up the mountain.

Rachel's lab, goofing around. Or, trying to destroy a natural beauty.

Should be our Christmas card photo, if only little Amos were here.

Dutch oven lasagna, cooked up with fresh greens from the garden. Really should get one of these...

Our group, gathered before shoving off for day 2 of paddling.

 Beautiful scenery the entire trip.

Captain T-Bone, at the helm with R's special wooden paddle. Got a lot of compliments on it throughout the trip.

Low flying aircraft buzzed over us, following the canyon's bends.

One of our several take outs--lunchtime! Trip was full of snacks and meals. Each party took care of one meal for the entire group along the way. We cooked breakfast the second day--didn't get any pictures of our 2-dozen egg breakfast burritos though...

Caught a rainbow on the drive home. Perfect ending! A great reminder of the LORD's promise after a weekend of flooding rains in Colorado.
